Electronic Arts has undergone a dramatic transformation ever since John Riccitiello became chief executive officer. The company, once maligned for its sequel-laden portfolio, took substantial risks in 2008 by investing in numerous original IPs, instead of “exploiting” existing IP’s in a never ending string of sequels, Madden notwithstanding. New IP’s included “Mirror’s Edge,” “Dead Space,” “Boom Blox” and “Spore.”
Unfortunately, the publisher’s significant risks have not seen equal rewards. [continue reading →]

As a regular reader of this site you probably have already seen our Wii Music twisted trailer a couple of days ago. It seems that people kind of like it. The sarcasm was felt around the interwebs and most people agreed with our take wholeheartedly. Not all. There have been a few responses that have been in defense of this fine, fine game.
Really???

With GTA IV’s April 29th release date fast approaching, gamer anticipation and media coverage has already reached Halo 3 levels. The game seems primed to break previous sales records and give the anti-gaming establishment yet another far flung reason to hate on our chosen entertainment medium. The only major concern gamers have about the title is EA’s impending offer to acquire Take-Two. While EA’s purchase of the company would not directly harm the already finished game, EA fearing gamers are already wary of what the future may hold, for one of the most successful and popular franchises of all time.
Luckily, Take-Two shareholders have yet to buckle to EA pressure.
Find out all the details after the jump!

Redacting=Giant black blocks
It was a busy news week, so I figured I’d come into the Sarcastic Gamer compound on the weekend to get this out there; you know, get caught up on work.
Respected video game designer and director David Jaffe, director of both God of War and Twisted Metal Black, posted a teaser email on his blog site last week to show he was working on another game. He tried to be slick by blurring over some of the words, but he should have redacted them, because photoshop ninjas were able to unblur to the point where the the email could be read.
What does it say? Follow me into the jump to find out!

I never stopped being an 11 year old boy. I still eat too much sugar, I still hate having bed-times and I’m definitely still scared of girls. Perhaps the only change is that somewhere along the line I stopped caring about pro-wresting. It might have been because I banged my head on a friend’s bedpost trying to imitate a Moonsault; I can’t remember (we’ll chalk that up to the concussion).
Despite my minor injuries I still hold the hobby in pretty high regard. If the Darren Aronofsky movie showed us anything it’s that though wrestling is unapologetically campy and kind of stupid; the efforts of the people involved are still absolutely worth celebrating. WWE: All Stars definitely set out with this in mind, yet unfortunately, it takes a dive in execution.

Derek Robbins at 411mania recently scribed this masterpiece on the Top 10 Most Overrated Games of All Time. While he does well with most his picks, the point of interest is what he selects for the #1 spot: The Halo series.
Halo is my definition of a casual gamer’s game. It’s good for the industry in that people are buying videogames, but I think that most competent game developers could probably recreate Halo. Nothing, and I mean nothing, separates it from your run of the mill FPS. The only difference I see is publicity, so Halo gets more credit than it rightfully deserves. Fun game? Sure. If fans of Halo tried other first person shooters though, I’m sure they would see the franchise is lacking in comparison to other shooting franchises.
Right on, man. You’ve explained the way I’ve felt about this game since day one better than I could have. Halo is an average game that does a lot of things right, but it’s so generic among other FPS titles. If the original game was released on PC, and not on a shooter-starved Xbox console, it wouldn’t be as popular among reviewers and gamers alike.
Derek, you and I could be great friends. No, seriously, text me sometime.

I’ll get this out of the way: dual analog sticks. There we go: sold already, right?
